Many a times as a Developer and a computer scientist, I have thought what I see in this in industry is torture of Code. I would compare this to the persecution of Jews by the Nazi regime. I have seen codes being torn apart, getting wasted over time, dying...working as a support person in a C / UNIX project I haven't done coding for about 4 months now. My fingers twitch and get cramped even at the faint attempt of trying to code.
What have I done, What have I become? Many of you might be thinking what I have I been doing for the past 4 months then??? We let me explain.
For me being in Support has been one hell of an experience.
- Profanity is one thing that is pretty much persistent here. I have heard things ranging from What the Hell???! to the F*** word and almost every god damn thing in between. Talk about a kick start in a project. So don't mind if my blog has profanity in it too.
- Managers or should I say People with license to lie. One thing I know for sure is, if there is a place called Hell, they are all bound to see it when they die >:). I wish I could be the judge there in the fiery depths of hell trying to decide which kind of torture they should be put through. Ah....My fantasies...Anyway back to the point why do I say they are so? I am not saying all of them are. But what I have seen every single one of them opens their mouth and there comes out the lie. It is more like politicians, give promises and hopes to the people and once the "their" things are done, the attitude changes to Why should I care about them???
I do not blame these people for the acts they commit, it is more like they have signed the pact with devil and they are forced to do so. Trying to show off in front of clients, the good thing is not all clients fall for it and quite fortunately ours is one that doesn't fall >:).
While some are forced to say, others do it so that they get money and power, some term it as success but at the cost of what??? Being pawns in the game of chess, they don't mind sacrificing a few so long as they are winning the overall game. Such people due to inbuilt genetic instinct to survive, tend to defend themselves at the cost of anything. Imagine sailing in a ship where the captain is the first one to jump when a crisis occurs. Great stuff ain't it. This is exactly how it is over here, captains giving up the post, jumping ships. So long as there is enough greens they are all satisfied, who cares about the crew, after all it is they break sweat in running the ship. All I need to do is just here and turn the wheel. Well I would ask these people to go watch a copy of "Das Boot" and see what captaining a ship is all about and not like what we do in this god forsaken industry.
I have even seen these people say that other companies are bad players even though they come from the very same company. Now that is business. True Politics. - Documentation and Quality process, got a give a high 5 for that. We believe that by creating document, we can become champions in quality. Well I would like to use some profanity here like my OC, but I am unfortunately a bit more civilized. But to give an analogy I would like to say that trying to paint a house even before building it sounds crazy to me =)).
- "I Will not code, I wont touch the code, I am not here to code" , I have heard that from managers before. Hmm...I wonder whether coding is something like cleaning the toilet, is it that filthy and a dirty job so that only us low lifes supposed to do. Well it is a culture that Managers do not code, at least in our part of the world. May be people should get a look into Joel's view on software development. I am not going to ask these people to touch code either, but then that statement doesn't come for free either there is an attachment. Don't tell us how to code either? Stay out of our business, you can see the final result but don't ask how to do our job, if you are not interested in touching the code.
What is even worse is most of these people are technically challenged. Saying out things like UNIX is simple or argue over using single or double quotes in grep command or to use grep alone or cat and grep together. Well blow me down. These people especially the technically challenged ones are very much in love in Documents. The second most important thing thing they love is long pointless meetings. I am loving it here.
But unlike machine parts we think, we feel that is why some of us (not all) decide to come out of this machine one day or another and decide to be independent, rather than being an unknown part of an unknown machine, doing nobody knows what. Sometimes we get that realization and see that we are too worn out to come out of it. Some of us wake up in time to see that there is still some of me left.
I dedicate this post to a good friend of mine and a former colleague, who realized that he isn't worn out yet just when things began wearing out and left the machine for good.
